The Food Revolution

Last night, Patrick and I watched Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution on TV.  I would love to tell you that we were on a hot date and that we had to tivo it, but that would all be a lie.  We were at home on a Friday night with our children, watching TV and babysitting a tiny sweet baby.  Such is the good life!

Anyway, I was so in awe of the show, that I just had to blog about it.

What is wrong with our nation?  We are in a huge food crisis that is affecting our precious children.  If I were President, or the President's wife, this is the area I would be concentrating on.

Now, my children are no strangers to donuts and french fries. Heck, we are on a first name basis with the owner from The Donut Lodge, so I don't believe in neglecting all treats from one's life.  What fun would that be?  But, I do believe that these are special treats and that one should lead a balanced diet---full of fresh food.

Last night's show involved Jamie at an elementary school trying to change the school lunch system.  They were upset at him that he was trying to serve the kids brown rice and that only consisted of one bread serving.  They insisted that he add a slice of bread to the lunch to fulfill the 2 bread serving per lunch.  Plus, french fries qualifies as a veggie serving.  So, if the kids ate 2 slices of bread and french fries with chocolate milk, the school would consider that a healthy balanced lunch.  What!!!!!

Then we wonder why America's children are becoming obese and diabetic and we are slowly loosing them to television and video games.

The school was very hesitant to change their school lunch system to match Jamie's healthy and fresh way since it takes longer to make and therefore costs more money.  Well, doesn't treating childhood diabetes and obesity cost even more money?

I love you Jamie and am joining you in on the fight to change America's way of eating--starting with my family.   Now, I'm going to get off the computer and join my children who are running around outside.
