Petite Picasso Camp

Spring break is over (for some) and hard to believe, but it is already time to start thinking about summer. Especially with our beautiful weather this week, it has definitely put me in the summer mood.

I love everything and anything about Petite Picasso, so I just had to pass this along. It sure makes me wish I was a little kid again. Thank goodness I can live vicariously through my own children.

June 13-16- Spa Camp (Cara Drougas)

Four fun filled days making lotions, lip balms, face scrubs, bubble bath, eye pillows, and more! The last day girls get to enjoy their hard work with a spa day with manicures, face masks....

June 20-34- Art of Music I (Mitzi Metcham)

Art means many things at Petite Picasso! This great camp combines music and art in a harmonious way! Mitzi from Music n’ me We will combine singing, dancing and art culminating in a wonderful performance on stage. Enjoy learning about music and performing while using instruments we make in class!

One of my favorite things about Petite Picasso is the popular birthday parties I host. And my most favorite thing about the parties are making the cupcakes. The batter is only the start as the toppings are so much fun to create. Kids will learn piping techniques, easy fondant tricks, various batter and buttercream recipes and will take home pastry tips and bag kit to practice their new favorite hobby at home! Limited spots available! $55

June 27-30- Culinary Camp (Deida & Duane Runswick)

Does your child love to cook AND create? We will be making everything from Italian to Mexican, Asian to American and everything in between. Dough from scratch, baking, healthy snacks, fun food, candy making.....painting, mixed media, custom plate and more. Special restaurant field trip to see the inside of a local kitchen. LUNCH INCLUDED, they are making it!

August 8-11- Mud & Mixed Media ~ “An adventure in sculpture” (Sarah Long)

Sarah Long, owner of Bella Cosa studio in Bellevue, shares her creativity with kids in this great summer camp. Clay slab projects, painting ceramic bisque, sculpture and multiple mixed media projects.

August 15-18th- Junior Explorer Camp (Deida Runswick)

This one is for the little guys and gals! We will explore bugs, plants, and the earth thru exploring, art projects, and cooking! A fun summer treat for the little ones who want something fun and healthy.

August 22-25- Back to School Fashion Camp (Cara Drougas)

A bit of fashion a bit of function. Kids will make fun school supply projects, desk decor and fashion accessories. Let them make a statement starting off the year with cool custom made accessories and decor! Too many projects to list!

Ages 8-12

Summer Camps are 4 days in length and are not available on a per day basis, except for Cupcake Camp. Please bring a bag lunch for you child each morning or plan to drop one off by noon (except culinary camp). Drinks and a small snack provided each day. Cost $150 per 4 day session. Siblings receive a 20% discount on second child ($120). Cancelations within one week of camp forfeit deposit unless spot can be filled. Cancelations more than a week before a camp starts get a refund less $20 processing fee unless another camp is rebooked.

They are just perfect for my daughter's room and add a little bit more excitement and color.

Ok, I tried, I really did!

I thought about coming back to this blog, but my one and only 2011 resolution is to simplify my life--better for me, better for my family. With that said, I have decided it best to only have ONE blog, which will be my family personal blog.

This Sun Valley blog will still be up and running so please feel free to come back and browse as often as you like and maybe, just maybe (very rarely though) I may add something to this blog.

Thanks for everyone's support, advice and readership this past year. It's been a fun ride!

Winter fun is still not over!

In case you haven't noticed, perhaps you haven't, but I took a brief break from blogging, but now I am back. This valley is just too cool and my brain can't hold all of my thoughts, so I have to get them out somehow!!

Yeah for all our new white stuff!!

What a great Saturday we have had so far. First we stopped at the Senior Connection in Hailey (across from Roberta McKercher Park) for their old fashioned ice cream parlor. What a special treat. Single scoop cones (which are mighty big) are only $1. We opted for some of those and split a banana split. Great ice cream in a cool atmosphere. Currently they are open on Saturdays from 1-4pm, but will expand their hours come spring/summer.

Then we were off to see the Tortoise and the Hare presented by St. Thomas Playhouse Children's Touring Theatre. We haven't missed a single one their annual performances and always walk away with smiles on our faces. Be sure to check out this FREE event that will delight the whole family.

Personally, I like to volunteer with my family. It allows me to stay connected with our community, without taking time away from my kids. Plus, it teaches them a valuable lessons about giving back while having fun.

This past weekend, I had the great pleasure to volunteer for these fine folks during the Sun Valley Snowshoe Race. Basically, if there is ever an event that Liz Clark or Brad Mitchell put on, I will be the first to volunteer since they are high class people with big hearts. The 2nd Annual Snowshoe Race was a big success on such a beautiful day. Man, I love this place!

If you want a great photo location with Baldy in the background, then the Nordic Clubhouse (down Sun Valley Road, past the resort) is an ideal spot. Plus, you can have a little nordic skiing adventure, some delicious lunch (surrounded by great views) and some outdoor wear shopping done.

Spirit of Idaho Award

The Spirit of Idaho Award is an award for anyone in Idaho that inspires everyone they come in contact with by "Demonstrating Extraordinary Faith, Love and Courage".

It was created by the Mrs. Idaho staff and is in honor of a friend who passed away this summer from cancer. She was the mother of two young daughters and was a wonderful lady. The award will be presented at the Mrs. Idaho America pageant in Boise on February 12th.

You can email mrsidahoteam@yahoo.com with the person you would like to nominate and a message telling them why this special person deserves this award. The winner of this award does not have to be involved in pageants and can be a man, women or child.

Infant and Toddler Assessments

This past weekend, we adopted the most wonderful kitten from the animal shelter and our home and our hearts are filled with more love than we could have ever imagined. Who knew that such a tiny creature could make such an impact on an already established and happy home?

As I have stated before on this blog, our local Animal Shelter is such a loving and caring place for homeless animals, but they are always seeking homes for their dogs and cats. If you are interested in adopting a pet and making your day even more brighter, then please consider your local animal shelter first.

The Sun Valley Resort's ice sculptures are better than ever this year. Just imagine a huge ice slide that even adults can slide down (trust me, I had to try it!). Your family will have so much fun checking out all of the ice sculptures while creating a fabulous photo op!

While you are there, you could even stop by the pond in front of the resort and feed the hungry ducks. You will be VERY popular!

A family snowshoe adventure with the Chariot Stroller being pulled on a sled and being used as a carrier for our snowshoes, other outdoor equipment and a kid (or two).

Our Chariot Stroller was one of our greatest investments as a parent. We have used if for the last 6 years and use it year round---for walks around the neighborhood, on bike rides, on community fun runs and even for snowshoeing.

The family that stays active together, stays together.

If you are looking for our family, or most local families, on the weekends, just head over to Dollar Mountain. It is the winter social scene. While our oldest son is partaking in the Spud Ski School (highly recommend it by the way for ages 5 and up), my husband and I ski with our two youngest on either the chairlift or the magic carpet ride.

SV Company has taken Dollar to a whole new level with their terrain park (and sledding hill). It is still a great family mountain, but now adds more excitement and challenges for all ages.

Since hot chocolate breaks in the lodge are quite mandatory, I decided to sneak away from my family for a really quick snowshoe adventure on the White Cloud trail (awesome nordic skiing and snowshoeing trails).

So, while I was doing this....

it was fun to watch the action on Dollar, where my family was.

Then, it was back to my skiing with the family.

It's a good life!

The simple things

Christmas break is coming to a fast end. Lunch boxes are packed (saves me a lot of time and sanity in the morning) and snow clothes are in backpacks all ready for the early morning tomorrow. That two weeks sure went fast, but as I look at it closely, we sure crammed a lot into that time. Safe driving to all of you tomorrow on the cold, dark morning.

We are such an outdoor family, but we have recently discovered a new family favorite indoor activity that has helped us during these cold days: playing cards. Such a simple and cheap game that has entertained our family for hours. Every night, we gather around the dinner table and play a round of War, Go Fish or Old Maid. The best part, some mornings, when the kids would wake up before us (pure joy!), they would stay in their rooms playing cards together. Heavenly!!

2011 is a going to be a GREAT year full of lots of family activities!

Update to missing dog

Thank you for to all of you for your concern and hunt for our sweet dog. I am beyond happy to say that she is home sweet home. As a friend said, maybe she wanted to ring in the new year with a big adventure. She is skinny, cold, and a little off, but we are bombarding her with lots and lots of love. Time to wipe away the tears and begin the new year.

We think Calle ran away when the fireworks began last night. Like most dogs, she is terrified of fireworks and we think she ran away out of fear. Plus, the cold probably made her a little disoriented. Lesson learned.

A big thank you to everyone, especially to sv online for all your help and care. I may not leave Calle's side for the rest of the day.

Missing Dog

We our missing our 9 year old female chocolate lab. She goes by the name of Calle and all she wants to do is hike and be loved. Super friendly towards all and she should be wearing her collar. She ran away from our home in Cutters Neighborhood in Hailey sometime on Friday, December 31st. Considering how cold it is and how much she loves her warm pillow and family, we are very concerned about her. She is the best family dog and we miss her. Snowshoeing for the whole family

On Christmas day, we took the whole gang (including our two dogs) for a snowshoe adventure around the Whitecloud Trail near Penny Hill and the SV Resort. EPIC nordic skiing trails and snowshoeing trails. Seriously, for a trail in the heart of downtown, it is rather amazing. Especially, on a bluebird day and you are on top of the mountain. We were in complete awe!

The kids either snowshoed next to us or were pulled in our sled going up the hills. As for going downhill, they were thrilled to be sledding down at full speed while the dogs chased after them.

Snowshoeing is not only a great family activity that gets you fresh air, but you can also burn up to 700 calories per hour. It's like killing two birds with one stone.

Above picture was taken at the Galena trails a couple of years ago. That is another great place for family snowshoeing and we are hoping to explore the trails there this weekend.

Dinner date

To celebrate our 10th anniversary (still can't believe that time has gone by that fast!), my husband and I went on an impromptu dinner date to Sego in Ketchum. The kids begged us to take them to the YMCA's Parents Night Out---seriously, they really did. So, my hubby and I were left with a few hours to ourselves. Since this is a rare occasion, we loved every minute of it.

After walking around town to see all the beautiful Christmas lights and to do a little window shopping, we headed over to Cornerstone for some drinks (water for me) and to check out the social scene. Boy, that place is always packed--must be a good sign.

Then, we ventured down the street to Sego for a light dinner. Since we weren't too hungry, we decided to sit at the bar for the first time and experience what all of our friends were talking about. Even though we were "at the bar", we were still in a comfortable and private booth and had great service. Everything from the warm rolls, to the hamburger condiments, to the mini donuts made my mouth water more and more. After a delicious and healthy, once again, Sego proved to be my favorite valley restaurant.

Skiing and Tubing at Dollar

We took the three kids skiing today at Dollar and to say that Dollar Mountain was busy would be a HUGE understatement. Holy Moly! I don't know if I have ever seen it that busy. Even though the kids weren't able to get as much runs in, it made me excited to see people taking full advantage of Sun Valley's amenities.

With the big storm coming in tonight and tomorrow, I have a good feeling that Thursday may be great powder day!

Be sure to also check out Sun Valley's new tubing hill at Dollar Mountain. You can experience the thrill for a small fee and it is definitely worth it.

Fruit of the month

Summer brings us loads of sweet berries and a wide variety of fresh fruit.

Christmas time brings us Cutie oranges.

We buy boxes of these small juicy oranges at least once a week and eat them all day long. Yummy! Even little fingers can easily peel these sweet oranges and they make a perfect addition to lunchboxes. Time to load up on your Vitamin C.

Free ice skating

We are fully enjoying our Christmas break together as a family and hope you are doing the same! Since watching the Nutcracker on Ice and being honored by a surprise performance by US Gold Medalist and Dancing With Stars finalst, Evan Lysacek, we just had to take the kids ice skating.

This is my best attempt at taking a picture of Evan, but I was just so excited that I wasn't able to capture the best photo. Thank you Sun Valley for this wonderful Sun Valley Christmas gift. What a great surprise!

Our little family skating at the Hailey ice rink at Roberta McKercher Park (across from the airport and the Senior Center). Not only is this a fun family activity, but it is FREE! You can go ice skating at any time and borrow the ice skates for FREE. They have a large trailer full of ice skates of different sizes and completely on the honor system, you can pick out your ice skates, have fun on the ice and then return your skates when you are done. This ice rink is well used and made me so happy that our town offers such neat family activities for everyone.

Great ski program for kids

Growing up in in Arizona has made me fully appreciate and honor the fact that my kids are already better skiers than I am...and I'm perfectly OK with that. I will just be their biggest cheerleaders as they zoom past me on the hill.

I have also come to realize that I'm not the greatest ski instructor for our kids, so I consider this ski program a huge blessing and my son had the greatest time last year with the experienced instructors. He never wanted to stop skiing.

Definitely check it out!

Christmas Eve in Sun Valley

If you want a traditional, old fashion Christmas, then Sun Valley is the place for you!

Sidewalks are covered in snow, streets are twinkling with Christmas lights, stores are decked out in beautiful (and not over commercialized) decor. There is a peaceful and nostalgic feeling around town. You don't want to miss it----we try out best not to.

Our Christmas Eve tradition begins (after church, of course) with the Nutcracker on Ice at the SV Resort outdoor skating rink. This FREE performance begins at 5:00 pm and the magical Resort even serves FREE cookies and hot chocolate. Amazing! The entire performance lasts between 30-45 minutes and is all outdoors. Be sure to bundle up in lots of layers and bring a blanket to sit on for comfort and warmth.

Right after the beautiful performance, you can watch the spectacular fireworks and Dollar Mountain torchlight parade. All of this will definitely put you in the mood for this special holiday. Be sure to give yourself lots of time to arrive and leave since practically the entire town and MANY tourists also consider this their family tradition. 'Tis the Season. This is a simple craft project that kept my family entertained for quite awhile, even the two year old. Plus, it added a lovely addition to our Christmas tree.

Popcorn and Cranberry Strings:

You will need:
bowl of day old popcorn
bag of fresh cranberries (not frozen)
cheerios (optional)
string/thread,
tape
needle
Christmas music is a must-have as well.

String the food supplies onto the string. Voila!

Simple as that!! To make it easier for the kids, I tied a knot on one end and taped it too the table so the string wouldn't move around so much. This is great fine motor practice for little hands.

The cheerios are completely optional, but make life a lot easier for little fingers

If you were anywhere near town, you could feel the excitement and the buzz over the holiday season. The streets, Atkinson,s and the ski mountain were full of folks enjoying this magical time of year. Thank you Mother Nature for letting it snow and snow and snow.

We took the kids skiing this weekend at Dollar Mountain and literally two-thirds of the parking lot was filled with cars from out of town. I get giddy over the fact that others flock here for Christmas just to enjoy our wonderful town.

During the summer, Memory Park in Ketchum is filled with giggling kids at the water park. During the holiday season, it is filled with many twinkling lights and looks absolutely amazing! Grab some hot cocoa and take the kids to a visit to Memory Park to fill the Christmas spirit. I bet you could also catch some awesome photos, especially with Baldy in the background.

Get your skis on

Yesterday was our first day of taking the kids skiing this season. We went to Dollar where the magic carpet and one of the lifts were open. Still the mountain was packed with families trying out their ski legs once again. It was fun seeing so many friends.

A few things to remember about taking your kids skiing:

*It takes a LONG time to get the car loaded and the kids dressed for skiing

*Start slow and stress free at first. Some of the younger kids get tired easily and aren't big fans of all the clothes and having their feet strapped down. You want to make it an enjoyable experience, so if your child only last 15 minutes, then hopefully he/she will last 20 minutes next time.

*Don't forget the hot chocolate inside after your day is over or if your child is needing a break. A nice warm treat!

*HAVE FUN! We have plenty of weekends of skiing and I can't wait.

Monkey See, Monkey Do

Last weekend, we wanted to take the kids to the Soldier Mountain All Stars gym for open gym time. We found out that you can drop off kids (over the age of 3), so we thought it would be a great idea to get some coffee and do a little Christmas shopping while the kids were burning off some energy.

Plans changed when we arrived at the gym. The kids were having way too much fun and we just had to join them on the trampolines, the uneven bars and the rope swing. One hour later, our time was up and we had the time of our lives. I don't know who had more fun, the kids or the adults. I can't wait for our next hour of gymnastics family time.

SMAS is located across from Power Engineers in Woodside. Open gym is every Saturday from 10am-12pm and costs $5/per child/hour. Well worth it!

SNRA Open House

I'm counting down the days until our weekend can begin! With all of this fresh snow, I'm just itching to take the kids skiing at Dollar Mountain. Something about being outdoors for hours, watching my kids enjoy themselves on the mountain and socializing with every family in town, really makes me a happy camper!

Besides skiing, this looks like a great family activity for Saturday...

On Decmeber 4th from 9 am-4 pm, the SNRA (Sawtooth National Recreation Area) is hosting an open house at their headquaters. There will be games, cookies and hot cocoa. Smokey the beat will also be there from 10am -2 pm for pictures and to great the kids.

This is also a great time to purchase your Christmas tree!

Hailey Holiday Parade

It's December and only a few more weeks until Christmas! This is Sun Valley's big show and my family just eats it up. The snow, Santa and the sparkles! It was a few years ago, during a family trip to Sun Valley during Christmas, that my family decided to back the big move (while I was 8 months pregnant) and call SV our forever home.

Tomorrow (Thursday) is Hailey's Holiday LIght Parade and the Tree Lighting Party. The festivities will begin at 6:00 on Main Street with the parade and then carry over to the Meriweather Buildind (where Java is located) where there will be Santa, carolers and treats.

Cutting down your own Christmas tree

Thanksgiving is over and was it ever joyous. Now onto Christmas!

For the first time ever, we cut down our very own Christmas tree in the Sawtooth National Forest. I felt like National Lampoon's Christmas (minus the mishaps!) and it put me instantly in the mood for the upcoming holiday. Ho! Ho! Ho!

We bundled up the kids in their snow clothes and drove past Warm Springs to find our perfect tree. Three other families were also out there finding their tree, but there was PLENTY to choose from. Our tree is now sitting so lovely in our home and I beam at it with pride.

In order to cut down your own tree, you must purchase a $5 permit from SNRA. You may cut down a tree up to 10 feet tall. They are fully prepared and will even give you a map and ideal locations to cut down your tree. They make it pretty simple for first timers!

Permits can be purchased from the following locations:

Sledding adventure

Isn't all of this snow amazing? I think we are going to have a great winter season. Just what this valley needs after Castle Rock fire and the recession. Let it snow!

This weekend, after we stuffed our bellies full, we took the whole family sledding at Rotarun in Hailey. Not being the biggest daredevil, I was always a little intimidated about sledding, yet have grown to love it. So much fun! I can do it all day long with my kids. Just make sure you are wearing proper clothing that will protect you when you face plant it in the snow.

Not only is sledding loads of fun, but it provides a great workout as well. I have to admit that I'm a little sore today from lugging the kids up the mountain over and over again on their sled.

To get to Rotarun, turn at Bullion in Hailey and head out to Croy Canyon. The mini ski mountain will be on your right hand side off of Rodeo Drive. A little hidden treasure in Hailey.

Opening Day

Mother Nature granted Sun Valley the best birthday wish---lots and lots of early snow. Happy 75th birthday Sun Valley!! It's going to be a fabulous year for you. With all this new snow, everyone spirits seem to be uplifted and jolly.

The mountain opens tomorrow (hip hip hooray!) and it is time to get this ski season started. After the Turkey Trot and a big Thanksgiving feast with my family from Arizona, we are headed to Dollar to reclaim our ski legs. Can't wait!

The boys of fall

Every fall, my husband takes my oldest son to a BSU game. It is the ultimate highlight of the year for our little guy. Literally, the entire town dresses up in blue and orange on game days. I didn't understand the magnitude of it until I was actually in Boise on one of the game days. Wow! I am a spirited person, but have never seen such school spirit come from a town. Pretty neat to see! So, if you have caught some Bronco fever, then get yourself to a game. Make sure to bundle up since it's getting mighty cold out there.

YMCA Giving Tree

Let me start by saying that this weekend's storm didn't quite produce as much as expected. Our 8-24 inches of expected snow turned into 1 inch. Big difference! Yet, we have many more months to excitedly wait for big storms.

It's glittermania at my house this weekend. We are having so much making and decorating the ornaments for the YMCA's Giving Tree. This is the third year that the Giving Tree will take place at the YMCA and every year I am humbled and moved by the generousity of this community.

Starting on Wednesday, we will be putting up the Christmas tree and decorate it with the ornaments. Each ornaments contains the wishlist of a local child from the Hunger Coalition and all presents should be returned to the YMCA by December 21st so the local families may be pick them up.

Hailey Turkey Trot

Lace up your shoe laces, start stretching your hamstrings....the annual Hailey Trot is coming in one week! This yearly family tradition is such a fun time for my family and many other families. Dogs, strollers, walkers, costumes, and serious runners are all welcome and encouraged. It's a great way to start your holiday and get ready for your big feast! It's a quick 5 K (3 miles) and you run/walk through neighborhoods and the bike path. Great course and lots of socializing with the community!

Portland with kids

I just got back from a whirlwind trip to Portland (literally one night) and really enjoyed being a part of a big city again. Something refreshing and intriguing about that city.

If you are looking for a easy family trip, Portland is a great choice. You can drive 9 hours from Sun Valley or hop an easy 1 hour flight from Boise.

While there, you MUST visit the Portland Zoo. We are a big zoo family and that zoo is my favorite of all time, especially the elephant exhibit. www.oregonzoo.com

Perfectly enough, right across the parking lot, is the fantastic Portland Children's Museum where kids can explore and imagine all day long. www.portlandcm.org

Both of those venues can offer a day full of family fun time that every parent dreams about.

Now that I'm back and Thanksgiving is almost here, I'm super excited about Christmas in our dream town of Sun Valley. As much as I cherish and adore summertime, this is the most magical time of year around here. The snow, the lights, the events. Plus, now that Sun Valley is celebrating its 75th year (Happy Birthday!) it should be one of the best years ever.

Great Saturday morning activity

While it's cold outside and we are waiting for the mountain to open, this sounds like a super fun Saturday morning activity to do with your little ones. SMAS (Soldier Mountain All-Stars) is a full gymnastics studio located in Woodside (Hailey) across from Power Engineers. My kids went last week to their open house and had a BLAST!

Want more gym time for CHEAP??? Every Saturday, except for Holiday weekends, we will have open gym at SMAS from 10:00-12:00 in the morning. It is only $5/hour. Anyone is welcome, not just SMAS students. Come play at our gym and get in shape while having fun!!

A great way to get a few more veggies into your child (and you!)

I like to call this "liquid magic" or "the breakfast of champions". Not only am I providing my kids and myself with a strong dose of their daily fruits and veggies, but it fills me up as well!

My daily morning smoothie that I share with my kiddos and that keeps me going:

*Nancy's plain yogurt (can substitute vanilla yogurt if it is not sweet enough for you)

*Kale or spinach

*One raw beet

*One cup of frozen blueberries thawed out

*One banana

*Flax seed

If I have extra fruit laying around, then I may toss in an apple, strawberries, etc.

Yesterday, we went to the YMCA to help them celebrate their 3rd anniversary. There were lots of various events going on and we honed in on the free rock climbing. It was loads of fun rock climbing as a family. My oldest son and I rocked climb on the big rock wall, while the two younger kids practiced their bouldering skills. Fun physical activity for the whole family!

(rock climbing is perfect for little monkeys like mine!)

Community and chamber members are invited to a Grand Opening and an Open House of the newly remodeled Spirit n' Motion Athletic School on Friday, November 5th, between 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. SMAS is the Wood River Valley's Gymnastics and Cheerleading headquarters, now offering FULL men's and women's gymnastics, as well as daytime and evening zumba classes for adults. Classes are offered from Preschool to adult ages 2 and up. Both Competitive and Recreational.

Official Ribbon Cutting with Mayor Rick Davis will take place at 6:00 p.m. at new SMAS facility located at 3950 Woodside Blvd. (across from Power Engineers)

Enjoy hot dogs, wine, refreshments, door prizes, face painting and a small performance/ demonstration. There will also be registration for new gymnastics classes, with a grand opening special of 50% off for all new students to SMAS. Please invite your friends and families. Kids can try out all their new equipment. Jumping castle will also be provided for younger children.

Spirit n' Motion Athletic School prides itself on providing the Wood River Community with a safe and positive environment for children and adults to develop themselves physically, mentally, emotionally, and morally through cheerleading, gymnastics, stunting, jumping, dancing, and fitness and is also home of the Soldier Mountain All Stars Competitive Cheerleaders. SMAS also offers classes at the YMCA in Ketchum. They do great birthday parties, and have open gym on Saturdays from 10-12 for only $5/hour.

What every active toddler needs

This bike has been the best thing EVER for our 2 year old son. He literally rides it every day. Either around the neighborhood or around our porch (and sometimes in our living room if I'm feeling like a lazy mom).

He loves his Strider bike and has become quite a pro at it. I truly believe that this bike helps kids get ready for a big kid bike, minus dealing with the training wheels.

It is quite darling to watch their little legs go as fast as can be on this miniature bike and has encouraged us to take more family bike rides and family walks.

Lunch ideas

A hot topic around the mommy circle is "what should I pack for my child's lunch?". This becomes an issue for me about two weeks into school. My creative lunch packing skills go out the window and I tend to pack the same things over and over again. Boring!

I know that I'm not alone, so I thought I would share a few ideas. If you have other ideas, please share them so my kids don't think they have the worst lunches ever!

*Quesadilla with avocado

*Cheese and crackers (they can make mini-sandwiches with them)

*carrots and dip (ranch, hummus or whatever they prefer)

*Cut up hot dogs and ketchup

*yogurt (Squeezeable, Brown Cow, Danimals, etc)

(speaking of yogurt, this new brand which I bought at Atkinsons is a HUGE hit for me and my kids)

*Grilled cheese sandwiches cut into cool shapes via cookie cutters (Pumpkins for Halloween?)

*Apple slices with peanut butter (if your child's school allows peanut butter)

*Pizza (tastes even better if homemade)

*Mac & Cheese, Spaghetti, Soup or anything else in a thermos

*Applesauce or a fruit cup

*Cut up fruit

*Cheese sticks

*Bagel and cream cheese

Hemingway Halloween Party

If you love Halloween, then the Wood River Valley is the place for you! So much to do during this holiday and so much candy. Life couldn't be sweeter.

On Sunday, October 31st from 1-3pm, Hemingway is hosting its annual Halloween party. This is a FREE event for ALL children.

Pumpkins, games, spook alley, crafts, cookie decorating, candy galore and more fun, fun, fun!

Come dressed in your best costume and be prepared to have a great time.

It is a free event, but donations are accepted and appreciated.

What every active family needs

Just because you have kids, that doesn't mean you have to stop all of your fun outdoor activities such as hiking, biking and cross country skiing. It completely changes things up, but include your little tykes with you. Not only will it give you a better work out, but it will also create an amazing family bonding opportunity. Also, you will be setting a great example for your kids.

With that said, here are our top picks that every active family needs:

A heavy duty hiking backpack. These are great for taking your kids hiking or just taking the dogs for a walk around your neighborhood. A must have! The kids loved being at our level and taking in all the scenery while talking to us.

If you have an infant, then the Baby Bjorn (pictured above) or the Ergo Baby is a life saver. I had a Baby Bjorn with all three kids and could even vaccuum around the house with it and grocery shop, besides hiking. Wherever I went, baby and Baby Bjorn went too.

The Chariot has also been a lifesaver for my family. It transfers from a stroller to a bike trailer to a cross country skiing trailer. Pure genius in my mind! It easily converts from one to another and your child will ride in comfort and style. It comes with a weather protector as well so if it's cold or raining outside, then you child can stay nice and dry inside.

Last, but not least is the Tag-a-long. This neat half bike for kids attaches to an adult bike. You can ride all around town with your little bike helper being pulled behind you. Your child can either help peddle (encouraged!) or cruise along behind you. Our 2 1/2 year old sometimes rides around on the tag-a-long in our neighborhood, but we are waiting until he is a little older to handle long distances.

There you have it, after having three young kids, those are my top picks that every active family must have. Get out and enjoy the great outdoors with your family!

Hailey Halloween Hoopla

This is yet another amazing community event that my family attends every year. Boy, if feels like I keep saying that over and over again. Thank goodness we live in such an active town!

The Hailey Halloween Hoopla will take place on Friday, October 29th from 3:00-7:00pm. This is a fun family event and caters to the young and old. Dress up your kiddos and yourself (if you desire) and enjoy Trick or Treating all over downtown Hailey. While collecting goodies and checking out all the adorable costumes, you will probably run into everyone you know. It's the cool thing to do! Plus, I get a quick peek into all the stores while my kids are filling their Halloween bags. Fun for the whole family! See you there!

Halloween at the Boise Zoo

If you are looking for a road trip or will already be in Boise, be sure not to miss Boo at the Zoo on Saturday, October 30th from 10:00am-5:00pm. It's a great family activity at the Boise Zoo and will definitely get you in the holiday mood.

Dress up your little darlings in their cute costumes and enjoy trick or treating around the zoo, plus a costume contest, a bat toss, pumpkin patch photos, and face painting all while checking at the animals at the zoo.

Cost is $7 for adults, $4.25 for children (ages 4-11), $4.50 for seniors (62 and over) and free for children under age 3. Of course, if you are a Friends of Zoo Boise Annual Pass holder (highly recommend it for the future) you may enter free and have a special entrance gate!

We went to this event last year and our kids had a blast. There will be A LOT of people there, so plan ahead.

Family Day at The Center

This Saturday, October 23rd from 3-5pm, the Sun Valley Center for the Arts is hosting a fun family day with a water theme.

Families will be able to make fish out of local clay and them decorate them with native riparian seeds. The masterpiece fish will become part of the exhibit (your children will be master artists!) . The best part? The fish will then be released into the Big Wood River in a closing ceremony on November 6th.

For those children who love to take their art projects home, they can make a paper fish to take home with them.

This is a free event! I think this is an event that we will just have to attend.

Slacking off during slack

My apologies for the lack of blogs lately. We have been eyeball deep with packing since we are moving to Cutters in a couple of weeks. Plus, we have been enjoying our almost daily bike rides and walks to view all the fall colors and take advantage of our perfect weather.

If you don't have your Halloween costume yet, Hailey has opened up a new Halloween store next to Yellow Brick Road (where Body Buff once resided). A huge selection of costumes and accessories will await you!

YMCA Parents Night Out

On Saturday, October 23rd from 6-10pm, our local YMCA will be hosting a special Parents Night Out. This means that any parents with children between the ages of 1-8 can leave their child at the Y while they enjoy a night out or in.

Children will be entertained with pumpkin carving, a haunted hollowed doughnut dive, ghoulish good grab-bag and a not so spookey Halloween movie.

Y members pay $20/child, non-members pay $25. The sibling discount is $15.

Leroy's educational donation

While getting our last ice cream fix for the summer, the very generous Toni (from Toni's ice cream) informed us that proceeds from Leroy's ice cream stand in Ketchum is donating $10,000 to local schools. Holy Moly! That is a 25% increase from last year. I guess we can safely say that we all love ice cream.

Thank you Toni and Leroy's for making our schools even better than they already are!

The sheep are coming!

The Trailing of the Sheep Parade always sounds a little odd. A bunch of sheep come down Main Street and thousands of people line the street to see this event. Yet, you have to see it in order to feel it's excitement. This is another event that we attend every year and the kids will talk about it for months.

Head on over to Main Street, Ketchum around noon on Sunday for the last parade of the year and to witness a huge annual tradition.

Thankfully for us, the weather should be nice (once again!) and we won't have to bring out our winter jackets like we did 2 years ago.

Fall Harvest Festival

Every year, my family loves to attend the Webb Nursery Fall Harvest Festival in Bellevue. This FREE event is the perfect kick-off to fall and a great place to stock up on our pumpkins.

This year's event takes place this Saturday, October 9th from 11:00am-3:00pm down in Bellevue. Plan for a morning of lots of fun for your family!

Creative Movement class for Kids

Local artist and instructor Amy Clifford is now offering a creative movement class for ages 3 and up at The Gateway in Hailey. Children will be able to express themselves while having fun! Classes are on Mondays from 3-5 pm and run from October 11th through December 13th. The cost is $100 pre-pay punch card/$10 an hour.

This Friday, Amy will be hosting an Open House in the Zen Den (creative name!!) which is in the basement of the Gateway. The Open House is from 3-5pm.

Since my oldest son takes Soo Bak Do at that time at the same location, this class is mighty tempting for my other kids (and for me!). Kids can never have too much art or movement time.

Fashion Show this Thursday

Role models and weather

This was Sun Valley last year on October 5th. Kind of hard to believe, isn't it!

Thankfully, this is Sun Valley this year (and my cute 4 year old). Thank goodness Mother Nature got it right this year!

Role Models. Most of us have someone that we look up to and more than likely our children have role models as well. Wether it's Brett Favre, Brett Michaels, or Elmo, these role models can and will influence your child. Some role models can be good and some can be not so good. So, why not be the role model that you want your child to have?

Being active together, eat healthy together, be kind and help others, read books together and do community service together . Doing all of this with your child will leave a big impact on their little lives.

Hope everyone had a great weekend. We spent as much time as possible outside.

Do you ever have one of those mornings where you wake up full of hope and know that it is going to be a great day? It's Friday! How can it not be a great day, especially when we are still having exceptional weather.

This weekend is full of potential for lot so fun. The only problem is choosing exactly what we want to do this weekend. A list of options:

*Community School Barn Sale (definitely!)

*Family bike ride (it's what we love to do all the time!)

*Walk around SV Resort and feed the ducks and swans

*Take the dogs to the river for a cool down swim

*Go for a great hike to see all the fall colors. Trail Creek is my favorite spot during the fall. Spectacular display of golds and reds.

*Gather more pumpkins

*Possibly our last outdoor BBQ with friends

Bike specials

One of the many things that surprised me about being a parent is how many bikes one kid goes through by the time they are 7 years old. It seems like every year we are buying our oldest son a new bike because he has outgrown his old one. Thankfully, we have three kids, so the bikes get a lot of use!

If you are in the market for a new bike, then definitely check out Formula Sports in Ketchum as soon as possible. Every time we need a new bike, we wait until September or early October and score some great deals on their old rental bikes. They use the bikes as rentals for tourists throughout the summer and then come fall, they sell them for a great discount. All the bikes we have purchased are in great condition and seem barely used.

We still have plenty of bike riding days ahead of us, so enjoy!

Swimming in September?

(Forgive me, this is the ONLY decent picture I have of the kids swimming from the past year. It's not taken locally, but a post without a swimming picture wouldn't be the same!)

If you told me that we would be swimming in Sun Valley the very last week of September, I would have thought you were crazy. This isn't indoor swimming I'm talking about, this is outdoor swimming! We have tan little bodies and tired kids to prove it.

The next three days will be providing us with marvelous and unheard of September weather, so if you get a chance, grab your kids and head to the pool for a day or just an afternoon of fun. You can thank me later.

New kid class in Ketchum

I always forget how much I love fall and how beautiful fall is in Sun Valley! With temperatures in the 70's (!!!) all weekend long, all of us should be wearing big smiles and bringing back our t-shirts.

Our YMCA has started a great new class for 3-5 year olds that explores movement, music, arts, tumbling, and more. Tuesday and Thursdays from 12:30-1:45pm starting in October. For more details and to register, please call Kat 928-6718.

Enjoy your great weekend. We plan to go to a soccer game, go to the park and perhaps even go swimming. Go fall!

The biggest and best yard sale ever!

If you have lived in the Wood River Valley for even a few months, you must know about the Community School's Barn Sale coming up. If you are a tourist, jot down all this info and you can thank me later!

Every October, the Community School holds an ENORMOUS barn sale in their Sagewillow Barn over in Elkhorn. The entire barn is filled to the max with clothes, shoes, furniture, sporting goods, home decor and anything else you can think of. This event is a big fundraiser for our local independent school and well worth the visit.

From now until the Barn Sale, they are still seeking donations of gently used or new items and they are always seeking volunteers to help go through everything. I have had the honor of volunteering this week and plan to do more next week since it was so rewarding and even fun. I got a good glimpse of some of the things that will go on sale and CAN NOT wait for the actual sale. I plan on stocking up on winter clothes for the kids and buying a few things for myself as well. I'm not a big fan of garage sales, but this was is different, plus they carry Prada and Gucci items!

Hailey is back in business

Hailey is like the little engine that just keeps on trying. With a population of less than 10,000 folks, Hailey is definitely small town America. A really cool town at that! Just when we all thought the economy hit our cute little town on the outskirts of Sun Valley pretty hard, it bounces back with full gusto and a party!

This Friday from 4-7 pm, gather in Old Town Mercantile to celebrate the Grand Opening of ten (yes, you read that correctly) businesses! Usually, Friday nights during the school year are saved for movie and pizza night, but this event will surely cause us to change our family plans. We will be out in the streets celebrating Hailey, once again!

Fun fall family activity

Fall is just lovely in the mountain of Idaho.

The air is crisp, the nights are cold and the leaves have gorgeous gold and red hues. Spectacular! Plus, it does help that we are still having t-shirt weather.

This weekend, we decided to go on a family bike ride and have a picnic in Ketchum. We parked our cars near Atkinsons, grabbed a few additional picnic items, put on our bike helmets and we were off on the bike path. I just love the ease and the beauty of our grand bike path, especially when I see how much it is used over and over again by families.

We rode our bikes to River Run (base of Baldy) and enjoyed the views while enjoying our picnic. The kids had freedom to run around the field or explore a little bit on the trails up Baldy. I enjoyed sitting back in a chair, soaking up the rays and watching my kids enjoy life in our sweet town.

When we were done picnicking, we hopped back on our bikes and scouted for more signs of fall. By the time we got to the car, the kids were tired and had happy smiles on their faces.
